The Ginyu Force (ギニュー特戦隊 Ginyū Tokusentai, lit. "Ginyu Special Squadron") is a fictional team featured in Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball anime and manga series. The team, led by Captain Ginyu (ギニュー隊長 Ginyū-Taichō), serve as secondary antagonists during the Namek Saga, helping Lord Frieza obtain the Dragon Balls, which forces Gohan and Krillin to work with Vegeta.
Conception and creation
Series creator Akira Toriyama based the Ginyu Force off of Super Sentai teams, as his son was a fan of the series. Both teams have members who are each different colors, (Ginyu being purple, Jeice being red, Burter being blue and Guldo being green) and tend to pose during battle.
Their names are references to dairy products: Guldo is derived from "yogurt", Recoome from "creme", Burter from "butter", Jeice from "cheese", and Ginyu is derived from the Japanese word for "milk" (牛乳, gyūnyū). Former member Bonyu also follows this tradition as Bonyu is derived from "breast milk" (母乳).
