Giorgi Aleksidze Tbilisi Contemporary Ballet[edit]

Giorgi Aleksidze Tbilisi Contemporary Ballet is the first contemporary ballet company in Georgia with Mariam Aleksidze as its Artistic Director.

Its main idea is freethinking in choreography, searching for pure forms in art and aspiring to the process of constant development while preserving traditions.

Founders[edit]

In 2016, on the initiative of Mariam Aleksidze, Dr. David Maziashvili and the like-minded people around them, Tbilisi City Hall established a contemporary ballet chamber company called Tbilisi Contemporary Ballet led by Mariam Aleksidze, and naming it after Eminent Georgian Choreographer Giorgi Aleksidze.

Giorgi Aleksidze Tbilisi Contemporary Ballet is the first contemporary ballet company in Georgia supported by the state.

The Company[edit]

As soon as the chamber company was established, its team was staffed with very experienced, interesting and strong individuals as Dr. David Maziashvili – Company Managing Director, Marina Aleksidze - the Company Manager and Ballet Master and Ketevan Mukhashavria - Ballet teacher and Répétiteur. The company consists of dancers of particular individuality, special qualities, appearance and technical skills.

Giorgi Aleksidze[edit]

People’s Artist of Georgia, holder of the State Prize and the Order of Honour, Eminent Choreographer Giorgi Aleksidze with his different ideology, musicality and unique movement language, brought about a significant transformation to the Georgian ballet.  In addition to classical ballet performances, Giorgi Aleksidze staged neo-classical, avant-garde and, despite Soviet dogmas, quite bold and contemporary ballets. He introduced the genre of symphonic dance, neoclassical style to the Georgian ballet, gave a new perspective to the classical ballets, created numerous original ballets forming a synthesis of elements from the Georgian and classical dances, using Georgian themes, working together with Georgian composers and artists. Famous stars, such as M. Baryshnikov,A. Osipenko, N. Makarova, I. Kolpakova, N. Dolgushin, I.Liepa, I.Nioradze and others, participated in Giorgi Aleksidze’s ballets.

Aleksidze’s work peaked in the genre of choreographic miniature and chamber ballet. For the highest achievements in the development of ballet miniature, he was posthumously awarded the Russian theatre prize Golden Sofit.

Artisitic Director[edit]

In 2009, one year after Giorgi Aleksidze’s death, Mariam Aleksidze as a choreographer realised her father’s conception and presented her first full-length contemporary ballet Dovin-Doven-Dovli…, based on Great Georgian Poet Galaktion Tabidzes poetry.

Mariam Aleksidze is the first professional woman choreographer of contemporary ballet in Georgia.

At the very beginning of her choreographic career, Mariam established Giorgi Aleksidze Foundation for the Development of Contemporary Choreography in Georgia. In 2013-2016, she was the Artistic Director of South Caucasus Contemporary Dance and Experimental Art Festival in Tbilisi, carrying out numerous educational projects to develop and promote contemporary dance throughout the South Caucasus.

In 2009-2020 Mariam Aleksidze has staged 11 full-scale, 10 small contemporary ballets, children’s performances and during the covid-19 pandemic 2 contemporary ballets created especially for camera.

Since 2016 Mariam Aleksidze has been staging original contemporary ballets for Giorgi Aleksidze Tbilisi Contemporary Ballet. The company is special on account of Mariam Aleksidze’s artistic vision – to preserve the unique style typical for Georgian choreography.

Repertoire[edit]

Giorgi Aleksidze Tbilisi Contemporary Ballet has its own unique quality, aesthetics, search of contemporary forms, artistic vision and repertoire.

Tbilisi’s contemporary, young, innovative company preserves Giorgi Aleksidze’s diverse and rich choreographic legacy. Besides works of Giorgi and Mariam Aleksidzes the company is a platform for young choreographers. Staging performances became a lively creative process, a kind of laboratory that involves composers, musicians, artists, actors, playwrights, writers, masters of various theatre technologies, creating Georgian productions of contemporary dance theatre.

The company implemented numerous educational projects to develop and promote contemporary dance in Tbilisi and regions.

In 2019 Giorgi Aleksidze Tbilisi Contemporary Ballet celebrated 10 years of Mariam Aleksidze’s work in choreography.

Season 2019-2020 was dedicated to the 80th  Anniversary of Giorgi Aleksidze.
