Giovanni Scuglievich[1] or Jovan Škuljević (Serbian Cyrillic: Јован Шкуљевић; Trieste, Habsburg Monarchy, 1802 - Trieste, Austria-Hungary, 1881[2]) was the patriarch of the Skuljević family and one of the rich shipowners, merchants and philanthropists of Trieste. Also remembered for generous endowments[3] was Risto Skuljević his nephew.[4]
Giovanni Scuglievich was born in 1802 in Trieste. The Škuljević (Italianized: Scuglievich) hail from Mostar in Herzegovina, though during the 17th century plaque they moved to Ragusa and from there they emigrated to Trieste in the 18th century. Giovanni was the patriarch of the Scuglievich family which included his younger brother Jefto Scuglievich (1803-1859) and Jefto's son Risto Škuljević (1843-1909).
After his uncle died Giovanni Scuglievich and his countryman Teodoro Anicich set up a trading agency in Commissions for Dalmatia and Serbia, located in Trieste at 1400-12 Via Nuova Sanità.[1]
When Giovanni Scuglievich died in his will he left 200 florins to the poor besides other bequests that he made during his lifetime.[5] He also supported Matica Srpska and subscribed to the journal Letopis, the ogran of the venerable Matica Srpska institution.[6]
