Girl Cafe Gun is an anime role-playing game developed by Chinese game developer Seasun. It was released for Android and iOS in Japan, China’s Mainland, Korea, and Taiwan Province and is planned to be released in North America in the near future. The game features visual-novel-like stories and Live2D figures that contain extensive interactions and realistic motions. Since its launch, it has been free-to-play and is monetized through gacha game mechanics as well as multiple types of in-app purchases.

Girl Cafe Gun takes place in an uncertain future of 20XX on Earth, where humans are striving to survive after ‘the Outbreak’, an incident where people are getting infected by contagious but powerful ‘Ionus’. The story follows the commander of a mercenary squad, referred to as Manager, who builds bonds with girls within the squad while leading them in fighting against alien enemies as well as human moles.

The game is a sequel to the developer’s previous work, also named Girl Cafe Gun, which was launched in 2016 and terminated its service in early 2020.

Gameplay

The core gameplay is character-card-based role-playing shooting; players will organize a fully customizable three-man team to deal with all kinds of dangerous enemies. Within each level, players can control the movements of the team as a whole and can trigger active skills of each character card. As players accumulate more resources over time, the teams they may assemble can be more powerful by promoting their character cards, weapons, and modules.

Later levels tend to be much harder, and new enemies will be unlocked as the player proceeds further. It requires players to explore how to allow their resources to exert excellent combat effectiveness and make the girls on the battlefield cooperate exquisitely.

Besides the main storyline levels with the goal of clearing them, players will be able to challenge themselves through various demanding types of levels. For example, in Bounty Mission levels, shields and HP will not be restored throughout all 33 levels, as well as Data Drill levels which require the lowest clearing time or highest damage dealt. The game also features various limited-time activity levels.

In the daily lives where players do not need to be on the battlefield, the player would be a manager of a maid café. Players need to strive for a living in this post-apocalypse world as well as build bonds with girls in the Café. Well-made Live2D figures allow players to interact with girls to create affection and unlock exclusive stories of them.

Reception

Girl Cafe Gun was highly appreciated since its release in China in late November 2019, ranked first in the App Store and estimated to have made a revenue of around 10 million CNY in the first month. However, resources allocated for this game were insufficient and led to numerous server outages, causing service disruptions and partial data loss. The developer gave out compensations later and managed to stabilize the availability a few months afterward, but some players had already left the game during this period.

As the first game of this kind developed by Seasun Inc., the game has been in constant battle with a variety of bugs and the chaos in its UGC sections. Since its opening, the ‘World’ channel has been polluted by spam, even after numerous measures the developer has implemented. After three months of adjustments, the game had stabilized itself but still suffered a considerable loss of players.

Although the incidents at the beginning caused a catastrophic impact on its user base, the game still has a considerable number of players and would attend numerous anime shows like ComicCup and Bilibili World. In May 2021, the game was forced to temporarily stop its service in response to the “Operation Qinglang” carried out by the Chinese Government, but it received wide-ranging support from its players.
