Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Mokushiroku[lower-alpha 1] is a post-apocalyptic role-playing video game developed and by Atlus and published by ASCII. It released for the PC-9801 in 1997 and a Windows port followed two years later. The gameplay uses first-person navigation of dungeons and a battle system similar to the Active Time Battle system used in the Final Fantasy series. The game is a sequel to the Tokyo Revelations manga and OVA with one of the characters from Tokyo Revelations being the younger brother of the main protagonist.

Gameplay[edit]

Giten Megami Tensei uses 3D first-person environments for the dungeons similar to early Megami Tensei titles. Demons in the game are allowed to gain EXP and level up like in Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne. They are also allowed to equip weapons and armor if it matches their Equip Type. The battle system is menu-based and a character has to cool down for a short amount of time after a turn before they can act again. This battle system is similar to the ATB system used in the Final Fantasy series. In the Windows version, time in between turns was measured based on the computer’s CPU clock speed which leads to the game being basically unplayable on modern computers without a patch.

Characters[edit]

Ayato Katsuragi is the game’s protagonist. He’s a Devil Buster. His age is 18. He’s a silent protagonist like many Megami Tensei protagonists. Also known as Yukihiko Souma in the novel version Distant Flow EXILE.

Yuuka Tachibana is the game’s female protagonist. She’s a Devil Buster. Her age is 16. She is the reincarnation of the Megami Ishtar. Also known as Shouko Utsumi in Distant Flow EXILE.

Rui Asuka is the Heroine for the game’s Chaos Route. She is a Devil Buster who was imprisoned within the Yoyogi labor camps. Her age and birth circumstances are unknown.

Tatsuya Hayasaka is a member of the Hatsudai Devil Busters and is Emi Kirishima’s lover. His age is 31. He dies under unknown circumstances after his initiation into the Resistance group Pentagrama.

Emi Kirishima is a mechanic for the Devil Busters. Her age is 20.

Yoshio Nishino is the commanding officer of the second division of Devil Busters. He lives in the Hatsudai Shelter with his wife and son. He treats the protagonist like his own son.

Isamu Yamase is a member of the Devil Busters. He is a gun specialist and has a cynical personality. He abandons his duty to protect the people of Hatsudai Shelter when it was being attacked by demons.

Tetsuya Sonoda is a member of the Ex-Harajuku Devil Busters and the Pentagrama. He seems to enjoy working with the protagonist.

Kouki Kamikawa is a member of the Ex-Harajuku Devil Busters. He is a kind and gentle young man. He fights with the protagonist for a while. When Bael is defeated, he makes a last-ditch attack and he is hit instead of the protagonist. He dies afterwards.

Story[edit]

Tokyo was destroyed by an ICBM, but a few people escaped the calamity by taking refuge in a shelter beforehand. Within the shelter, a strict status system was put in place and a special unit called the Devil Buster was established to prepare for the invasion of demons. Ayato Katsuragi, a young boy living in the Hatsudai Shelter, admires his father, who was a Devil Buster captain, and takes the test to join the unit.

Endings[edit]

Giten has 9 different endings.

Bad Ending: After Baal's defeat he asks if Ayato is willing to replace his place or pierce him with Baal's own sword. Saying yes to either question will lead to Ayato's consciousness overwhelmed by Baal. Even if Ayato struggles, what he sees is countless demons praising him as the king, but only for a second before Ayato loses consciousness again.

Ishtar Ending: Appears after clearing Yuuka Route with Neutral or Chaos alignment, or after clearing Betrayal Route with Neutral alignment. Ishtar embraces Ayato with her arms.

God's Chosen Ruler Ending: Appears after clearing Yuuka Route or Betrayal Route with Law alignment. Ayato stands atop of myriads of demons as the new ruler of Tokyo, with angels flying above Ayato.

Astarte Ending: Appears after clearing Rui Route. Astarte and Ayato stand atop of myriads of demons as the new ruler of Tokyo.

Tokyo Ruler Ending: Appears after clearing Betrayal Route with Chaos alignment. Ayato alone stands atop of myriads of demons as the new ruler of Tokyo. However, peace remains far away from Tokyo. Ishtar to the Moon: Appears after clearing Rui Route. Ishtar's soul flies towards the moon, waiting for the next opportunity to reincarnate.

Angel Awakening Ending: Appears after clearing any Route when Ayato is Light-Law-aligned. Ayato awakens as an Angel. A pair of angel wings grow out of Ayato's back.

Majin Awakening Ending: Appears after clearing Rui Route when Ayato is Light-Neutral-aligned. Ayato awakens as a Majin. He grows two more arms and the third eye, and has green skin (only in Windows version), resembling Indrajit.

Kishin Awakening Ending: Appears after clearing either Rui Route or Betrayal Route when Ayato is Light-Chaos-aligned. Ayato awakens as a Kishin. He has red skin (only in Windows version), yellow hair, a pair of horns and sharp fangs, resembling Belial.

There are two other endings but a way to trigger them is unknown.
