Glacier grounding line

The grounding line of a tidewater glacier is the outer-most line at which the glacier is supported by the sea floor. Beyond the grounding line the glacier instead floats in the water.
A grounding line can be a distinct line, but can also be a zone, which can vary in position and extent as the glacier moves with the tide.
The location of a glacier's grounding line is an important factor for determining its behaviour and size. [1]
