Glamour Shots is a franchised portrait studio founded by Jack Counts Jr. in Dallas, Texas, and is currently headquartered in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.[1]

History[edit]

Jack Counts Jr. was already the owner of a photo finishing business called Candid Color Systems when he discovered a business in Hawaii that was offering a makeover with a photo session. In 1988 he opened his first Glamour Shots location in Dallas, Texas which offered similar services. One of the first partnerships that Mr. Counts and co-investor James Greeley leveraged into greater success was with the Cobb Galleria Specialty Mall in Atlanta, GA. After only 6 months at this location, larger malls began requesting Glamour Shots locations of their own. Said Mr. Greeley of Gwynn Ross, Leasing and Marketing Manager of the Galleria "I really appreciate that she gave us that chance...I'm no Ted Turner. We didn't have much money, just a good idea."[2] From then on, heavy marketing efforts showing before and after photos, and rumoured celebrity sitings including Tonya Harding drove the popularity of the business.[3]

The stores were well known in the early to mid 1990's for providing full service photo shoots that included a makeover, outfits and flashy accessories. Glamour Shots was also a pioneer in the video proofing of it's photo sessions. Customers could see and order their photos instantaneously without having to wait for film development.[4]At its peak in 1996 Glamour Shots had 6,000 employees across 380 locations in the United States, Venezuela, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, and boasted $100 million in sales. However, as of 2019, only five remained, all in the U.S.[5][6][7]

According to the Glamour Shots website, two locations remain, one in Texas and one in New Jersey. They still provide a full-service portrait experience, but have expanded their offerings to include indoor and outdoor family portraits, children’s photography, senior pictures, as well as boudoir and pin-up sessions.
