Formation[edit]
The orchestra, originally named "Caledonian Strathspey and Reel Society", was formed in 1888 in Glasgow, holding its first concert, using only six fiddles, in Glasgow City Halls.[1][2] The groups began to play local engagements, and were eventually offered a room for practice in the Red Lion Pub in West Nile Street.[3]
Activities[edit]
The society was formed in order to foster Scottish music, especially strathspeys and reels.[3]
Notable members[edit]
There were six original members. Orcadian David Work was the first conductor, and the first meeting was held in his house at 150 Woodlands Road.[1]
