GlitterBeam is a radio station for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ+) community in the United Kingdom, broadcast on DAB digital radio in Cambridge, Tyne & Wear, and online through its website, mobile apps and smart home devices.
GlitterBeam launched as online-only service on Sunday 14 July 2019, offering a range of music and shows on specific formats. In 2020, the station hosted a series of special interviews with ex-contestants and guests of RuPaul’s Drag Race, during the Covid-19 pandemic.[1] In one of these special shows, Drag artist Lady Bunny has declared that the show is heavily edited and the narrative completely manipulated. [2] The station has also given a voice to LGBT+ hospitality venues struggling during the pandemic. [3]
GlitterBeam started expansion into digital radio in 2021.[4] the first area covered was Tyneside, through the first permanent Small-Scale DAB Multiplex awarded by Ofcom.[5]. The MuxOne multiplex covers around 380,000 adults and the towns of North Shields, South Shields, Whitley Bay, the Boldons, Jarrow, Wallsend as well as East Newcastle & Gateshead and North Sunderland. Test transmissions started on 29 November 2021 and radio stations went live at 7am on 10 December 2021.[6] On 29 December 2021 GlitterBeam also launched on small-scale DAB in Cambridge. [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]
In 2022 the station offered special coverage of the Russian invasion in Ukraine, with particular focus on the LGBTQ+ community. During a special broadcast, the executive director of Kyiv Pride made an appeal asking for help to the international LGBTQ+ community,[12] [13] and the singer Jamala recounted the moments of fleeing the country. [14]
In February 2022 GlitterBeam has also offered for the first time in UK, coverage and commentary for the Sanremo Music Festival’s final.[15]
The station is official media partner of Cambridge Pride 2022.[16] [17]
Managed by 40 volunteers remotely across the UK, GlitterBeam covers a population of around 600,000 adults on DAB, making it one of the biggest LGBT media platforms in the UK.
