Narendra Modi is the Prime Ministers of India.
General Facts
Modi is assessed globally in different ways- as a domestic political leader, as a foreign-policy strategist, and as a leader of a democratic Nation.
Again, his assessment varies on each of these fronts and differs from individual to individual.
Global assessment as a domestic political leader
As per an Essay "Indians’ views of Modi and other national leaders" published in August 2023 by Pews's Research Center- "About eight-in-ten in India have a favorable view of the prime minister, including 55% who have a very favorable view. A fifth of Indians have an unfavorable opinion of Modi." [1]
For various facts and reasons, majority of International political scientists often view Modi as one of the most electorally successful democratic leaders of twenty first century. For one, he has won three consecutive national elections as leader of the BJP-led coalition and has single-handedly transformed his party to a position of complete and paramount dominance in India.
For instance, Christophe Jaffrelot, one of the world's leading scholars of Indian politics, has said in his widely read 2021 Essay "Modi's India: Hindu Nationalism and the Rise of Ethnic Democracy" that "The BJP has become the dominant pole of Indian politics." [2]
Similarly Milan Vaishnav from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace says in his Essay "The BJP in Power: Indian Democracy and Religious Nationalism" that "The BJP has established itself as the country's pre-eminent political party." [3]
The international magazine "The Economist" described Modi's achievement in its 2019 article "What Narendra Modi should do next" in the following words- "Mr Modi has turned the BJP into the natural party of government." [4]
As per the 2018 article "In India, Karnataka Elections Set Stage for Dramatic Showdown in the State and in 2019" in The Diplomat- "The results in Karnataka reinforce how the BJP has become the dominant political force in India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi" [5]
Global assessment as a Foreign Policy strategist
Modi's global assessment as a foreign-policy strategist is generally positive. Among academicians, think-tank analysts, and diplomatic commentators, Modi is often credited with increasing India's geopolitical influence, expanding diplomatic partnerships, and pursuing a policy, which has come to be known as "multialignment."
