Global Development Institute
The Global Development Institute (GDI) is a research centre based at The University of Manchester which focuses on addressing global poverty and inequality. It is the largest dedicated development research and teaching institute in Europe. The Institute contains over 45 academics, up to 100 PhD students and in excess of 400 master’s students.
Foundation[edit]
The institute was formed in February 2016 uniting the strengths of the Institute for Development Policy and Management and the Brooks World Poverty Institute. It is led jointly by Professors Uma Kothari and David Hulme. The Brooks World Poverty Institute was established in 2005 following the donation of £1.3 million to the University by the Rory and Elizabeth Brooks Foundation, one of the largest known gifts to fund poverty research in Europe. In September 2008, the Foundation awarded a further £1.4 million to the Brooks World Poverty Institute over three years and in June 2012, a further £1 million.
The Institute for Development Policy and Management (IDPM) focused on research into international development issues aiming to promote poverty-reducing social and economic development, particularly within lower income countries and for disadvantaged groups, by enhancing the capabilities of individuals and organisations through education, training, consultancy, research and policy analysis.
The GDI receives funding from The University of Manchester, Rory and Elizabeth Brooks Foundation, the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Department for International Development (DFID), the Sustainable Consumption Institute (SCI) and the Chronic Poverty Research Centre (CPRC).
Reputation[edit]
Development studies at The University of Manchester are ranked third in the QS World University Rankings[1]. The results of the most recent Research Excellence Framework ranked GDI first for impact ranking in Development Studies in the UK.[2]
Brooks Doctoral College[edit]
The Brooks Doctoral College, which sits within the GDI, was launched in November 2015. It is the first doctoral college for Development Studies in the world.
