The Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD) is an international network of around 200 journalism support and media development organisations working across more than 70 countries.[1] Its main focus is to ensure proper collaboration as well as an exchange of information and experience among its members.
History[edit]
GFMD was established in 2005 in Amman, Jordan.[1]
On 24 July 2018, GFMD was formally granted special consultative status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). UN consultative status offered a platform for the GFMD Secretariat and member organisations to participate in UN processes and apply for, as well as receive, project funding at local, regional, and global levels from UN agencies, grant-making initiatives, and donor countries.
As per its governance strategy, every four years GFMD hosts a Global Forum and General Assembly. Since its formation in 2005, GFMD has hosted Forums in
- 2008: Athens, Greece
- 2012: Johannesburg, South Africa
- 2016: Jakarta, Indonesia
