Global Illumination, established in 2021, was an NYC based tech startup led by Thomas Dimson (CEO), Taylor Gordon (CTO), and Joey Flynn (CPO). The venture received support from prominent venture capital firms including Paradigm, Benchmark, and Slow.[1]

The main product developed by Global Illumination Inc. was a browser-based sandbox game named Biomes. This game is described as an open source sandbox MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) built for the web using web technologies.[2] The gameplay and design of "Biomes" have been compared to the popular game "Minecraft," highlighting a sandbox environment where players can interact, explore, and create within a digital world. The game was particularly aimed at incentivizing creativity among its community of players. The platform for this game was accessible through the web domain biomes.gg, making it easily accessible for players to join and contribute to the community shaping the game's ever-evolving world.[3]

In August 2023, OpenAI, announced the acquisition of Global Illumination[4]. The acquisition was the first public acquisition by OpenAI. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.[5] This strategic move marked OpenAI's endeavor to incorporate the expertise and innovations of Global Illumination into its core products, particularly emphasizing the enhancement of ChatGPT.[6]

Since the acquisition, Biomes has been open-sourced[7] and continues to have a thriving online community.
