Facilities[edit]

GK9PG's headquarters and primary training facility in Opelika, Alabama[1] is the world's largest facility of its type solely dedicated to the training and development of commercial working dogs and handler education. This 75,000 square foot facility has been designed to focus on training canine teams (K9s and Handler) to search and detect a wide variety of odors that replicate the items and scenarios historically associated with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) or Narcotic Trafficking. This facility offers the following infrastructure:

  • Odor Recognition Training (ORT) Areas
  • Room Searches
  • Box Searches
  • Luggage Searches
  • 6 Acres Outdoor Training Areas
  • Patrol Work
  • Cargo Searches
  • Vehicle Searches (Indoors)
  • Classrooms
  • 220 Acres Offsite Outdoor Training Areas

GK9PG has two Kennel facilities located in Alabama and one located in Texas. These kennels have been built to meet or exceed the USDA and military working dog standards.

Training Approaches[edit]

Their groundbreaking training methodology is one of positive reinforcement. Using a positive reward system to support the canine's correct response to an imprinted odor. Canines are trained to produce a passive response upon detection of all trained target odors. Cross contamination of odors or the creation of an Odor Cocktail is strictly prohibited at GK9PG during the odor imprinting stage of canine development. Canines train on pure odors to ensure effective recognition in training and in the field.

Once canines have proven to be proficient in a controlled environment, they are introduced into operational conditions similar to their future assignments in which they will be expected to conduct searches. Allowing the canines to gain valuable experience in searching a variety of operational settings.

K9 - Information Management System (KIMS)[edit]

Global K9 Protection Group has designed and developed a proprietary web-based K9 Analytics software package know as the K9 - Information Management System or KIMS for short[2]. This software package tracks Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to enhance GK9PG's ability to understand and manage the full canine life-cycle; providing insights into canine inventory, training progression, and health records.

KIMS is internet-based and uses the “cloud” to collect, share and manage data and resources. KIMS automates administrative tasks using “Work Flow Processes”, which provides Project Management Teams with the ability to archive information and streamline processes and procedures. KIMS is primarily utilized to:

  • Support and monitor standard project processes, training, and canine care;
  • Facilitate real-time information transfer and feedback across the entire program;
  • Monitor and track project activities, milestones, and scope changes;
  • Analyze and forecast project performance;
  • Disseminate project status and intelligence to key stakeholders; and
  • Provide real-time information essential for initiating, planning, and executing projects.

Types of Canine Services[edit]

Single Purpose Service Offerings:[edit]

Single purpose canines are only trained to perform on task. The following outline of the types of canines that GK9PG offers.

Explosive Detection Canine Teams (EDCT):[edit]

Single purpose EDCTs are trained to identify and passively alert to a large variety of explosive odors that are known to present a real and present threat.

Narcotic Detection Canine Teams (NDCT):[edit]

Single purpose NDCTs are trained to identify and passively alert to a large variety of narcotics. The narcotics for which an NDCT is imprinted on will vary based on target odors and geographical location.

Patrol Canine Teams (PCT):[edit]

Single purpose PCTs are trained to aggressively apprehend potentially threating individuals. These canines specialize in reducing the threat and present a less than lethal option for the mitigation of volatile situations.

Dual Purpose Service Offerings:[edit]

Dual purpose canines are trained to perform multiple functions. These are specially selected from qualified single purpose canines to receive additional initial training. The following lists the types of dual purpose canine services that GK9PG offers:

Patrol Explosive Detection Teams (P-EDCT):[edit]

P-EDCTs are trained to detect the same explosive substances as the single purpose EDCTs, while providing the same apprehension capabilities as the single purpose PCTs.

Patrol Narcotic Detection Canine Teams (P-NDCT):[edit]

P-NDCTs are trained to detect the same narcotic substances as the single purpose NDCTs, while providing the same apprehension capabilities as the single purpose PCTs.

Personnel Screening Explosive Detection Canine Teams (PS-EDCT):[edit]

These canines offer a specialized form of dual purpose explosive detection capability. The primary focus of these dogs is to conduct open area searches for explosive that are being transported by an individual or through the search area. These canines are trained to detect the presence of the odor then track this odor to its source. These canines are extremely useful in areas that have heavy foot traffic. In addition to the mobile detection of explosives these canines are also trained to conduct traditional EDCT functions. These canines provide a holistic solution to the detection of explosive materials regardless of its placement.
