The Global Taiwan Institute, also known as GTI, is a non-partisan think tank based in Washington, DC focusing on policy issues regarding Taiwan. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, funded initially by its founders and now supported by individual, corporate, government, and non-government contributions. It is the only think tank in DC that is exclusively focused on US-Taiwan affairs.[1]

GTI was founded in 2016 by 37 cofounders, including former the Minister of Taiwan's Overseas Community Affairs Council Chang Fu-mei.[2] The institute has been directed by Russell Hsiao since its founding. Its advisory board includes Lanhee Chen, Kelley Eckels Currie, Wallace C. Gregson, Michael Reilly, Shelley Rigger, William A. Stanton, Mark Stokes, and Stephen M. Young, among others. The current chairperson of the board is Jennifer Hu.[3]

Although GTI does not officially hold any policy stances, its stated mission is "to enhance the relationship between Taiwan and other countries, especially the United States, through policy research and programs that promote better public understanding about Taiwan and its people."[4] Its coverage often aligns with the foreign policy stances of Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party.

In March 2023, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen received a GTI delegation headed by Former US National Security Advisor Robert C. O'Brien at the Presidential Office Building in Taipei.[1]

GTI has hosted senior Taiwanese thought leaders including Lee Hsi-ming, Hsiao Bi-khim, and Kung Ming-hsin.[5][6]
