Gnanendramohan Tagore

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Birth:

Born on 24 January 1826.

He was the son of the founders of Hindu College Prasanna Coomar Tagore and grandson of the founder of the Pathuriaghata branch, Gopi Mohan Tagore.

Career:

Gnanendra Mohan Tagore was the first Indian and Asian to clear the law exam and became a barrister, joining the tribunal in England in the year 1862. Gyanendra was the first Asian barrister.

He had gained a scholarship for academic achievement of Rs. 40 per month and entered Calcutta Medical College in the year 1842, but did not finish his medical education. When Hindu College was started, conservative sections of Hindu society believed that western education would not change the established structure of Hindu culture. They had even made Ram Mohan Roy stay outside of it.

However, ‘the oppositions between the College’s signature and its temporal course of study soon became apparent’ and many scholars of Hindu College adopted Christianity. Gnanendramohan was baptised into Christianity in the year 1851, under the leadership of his teacher, Krishna Mohan Banerjee. As a consequence, he was abandoned by his father and stripped of his inheritance. Prasanna Coomar Tagore bequeathed his large landed properties to his nephew, Maharaja Bahadur Sir Jatindramohan Tagore. Gnanendramohan later recovered some of the estates through the court.

In the year 1859, Gnanendramohan Tagore moved to England with his wife for a medical prescription. On doing so, he entered the University of London as a professor of Hindu Law and Bengali. In the year 1861, he was residing at Kensington Park Gardens, where he was attended by the student and loved one Rakhal Das Haldar on 28 May.

He passed the law exam and was appointed to the Tribunal in England in the year 1862; he was the first Asian to be so called. He returned to India in the year 1864 and registered at Calcutta High Court in the year 1865.

Death

He passed away on 5 January 1890 in England.
