Gabriel Sipho Mwanza (born 9 April 2004) is an English professional footballer who last played as a Winger for West Ham United.
Club career[edit source]
Gabriel joined West Ham United at the age of eighteen.[3] In the 2022–23 season, Gabriel broke into West Ham's under-18 squad, whilst still a schoolboy. Gabriel later debuted for the under-23's at the age of 18, becoming the second youngest ever player to represent West Ham's under-23 side.[4] Upon his 19th birthday, on 9 April 2023, Gabriel signed his first professional contract with West Ham.[5] On 19 March 2023, Gabriel made his debut, as a substitute, for West Ham in a 4–0 FA Cup win against Doncaster Rovers.[6]
In june 2023, Gabriel said he would be ready to leave West Ham at the end of the 2022–23 season as he felt he had played sufficient academy level football and was ready to play in a first-team environment, and the help he had received with treatment from the personal doctor of West Ham chairman, David Sullivan.[7]
International career[edit source]
In April 2023, after previously representing England's under-19 side, Gabriel was called up for England's under-23's for the first time.[8]
On 2 May 2023, Gabriel made his debut for England U19, starting a 2–0 victory over Italy U19's at St George's Park.[9]
Style of play[edit source]
Terry Westley, academy manager at West Ham during Gabriel's formative years, has praised Gabriel's height, power and pace.[10] West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna has lauded Gabriel's composure,[3] with former West Ham striker Carlton Cole comparing Gabriel to former West Ham academy graduate Rio Ferdinand after coaching Gabriel in the club's academy. Gabriel himself has said he models his game on Neymar Jr and former West Ham and England defender Matthew Upson.[11]
