Goblin Stone (video game) is a turn-based RPG created by Orc Chop Games. The game first released a demo for Windows on Steam in July 2021, followed by a two-week Closed Beta release in March 2022. The game is scheduled to release its Early Access version on Steam in the third quarter of 2022.

Plot[edit]

At the outset of Goblin Stone, the last surviving descendants of the goblin race are in a cavern searching for supplies to heal their wounded. As they prepare to leave, they are ambushed by adventurers. Fearing for their lives, the last surviving goblins hurl their valuable loot at the enemy and flee. As they make their way to the surface to escape, they come across a magical stone buried in the dirt known as the Goblin Stone.

The stone seeks its home and entrusts itself to the care of the goblins. With the guidance of the Goblin Stone, the journey of the surviving goblins begins. They travel across the land in search of their home. Along the way, they meet comrades and fight wicked adventurers and beastly creatures.

Gameplay[edit]

Goblin Stone is a turn-based strategy RPG in which the player manages a squad of goblins to explore the land, fight adventurers and other beasts, and eventually rebuild the goblin lair and their lost civilization. The player can assemble their adventure party from the game's seven available goblin classes: Peon, Shaman, Guard, Raider, Mystic, Bandit, and Hunter. Each goblin class has eight abilities to unlock, with the player able to select four of them for combat.

Breeding[edit]

Goblins do not level up, but rather increase their power by building and upgrading their abilities and weapons. More than this, goblins improve through each generation by breeding, unlocking, and combining genetic traits that make them stronger and more resilient in battle. Each Goblin has unique genetic characteristics that define them. You'll have to decide which genetic traits to cultivate by breeding goblins with those traits and culling those that don't.

Breeding is also essential for replenishing goblins, for when a goblin dies, that goblin is gone for good.

Base Building[edit]

The goal of base building is to provide facilities for the goblins in order to help support their adventuring campaigns. The player can manage the lair by building and upgrading each room. There are up to 5 floors referred to as depth that the player can excavate to build more rooms. Each depth has enough horizontal space for up to 4 rooms (of size 3) and one staircase. Access to depth levels is restricted by the Ancestry resource.

Adventure[edit]

Adventuring is a side-scrolling dungeon crawl in which a group of goblins navigates through procedurally generated maps, eventually encountering enemies, supplies, and treasure. Because each level is generated at random, each experience may be similar but not identical.

As the game progresses, the player will meet other friendly monsters such as Orcs and Gnolls, who will both help and be helped by the goblins.

The map is divided into six regions, each with its own story arch and boss encounters that must be completed before the player can progress to the next region.

Music[edit]

The Goblin Stone storyline is fully narrated by actor James Smillie and accompanied by music composed by video game composer Peter McConnell, who is known for his work on Hearthstone, Grim Fandango, Psychonauts, and Broken Age.
