God's Favourite Customer is the fourth studio album by American folk musician Josh Tillman under his pseudonym Father John Misty. Its release was announced on April 17, 2018. It is scheduled to be released on June 1, 2018 on Bella Union in the UK and Europe and on Sub Pop in the rest of the world.
Production[edit]
Songwriting[edit]
The songwriting of the album has been described as 'less pretentious' by Father John Misty himself when compared to that of previous albums Pure Comedy and Ilove You, Honeybear who are described as 'squarely concept' albums. The album was written over a six week period while living in a hotel.[1] In contrast to previous albums, the album has been described as a heartache album. In an interview with Uncut, the album was described as 'the real I Love You, Honeybear, but without the cyncism.'[2]
Recording[edit]
Recording of God's Favourite Customer took place throughout 2017. By November, Josh Tillman announced that recording was nearly wrapped up and only one song was being finished off.
Singles[edit]
Mr. Tillman was released as the first single on 22 February after it was first played live.
