Gods of Time was a free real-time 2D browser based MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role-playing game) with the goal of emulating downloadable MMORPGs, but with simpler graphics[1][2] and a guest friendly system where players could play without creating an account until after they had finished playing.[3] Unlike several other browser based games, Gods of Time didn't have a limit on play time, so players could play for as long as they wanted.[4] At the time of the game's discontinuation, there were 5 classes: Fighter, Cleric, Mage, Hunter, and Thief.[5]

History and development[edit]

Gods of Time was a game that started in 2007 and gradually amassed a large community and many features.[6] Gods of Time was shut down sometime around 2010, possibly 2011. Kicksome, Inc. was dissolved in 2013[7] and similarly-named companies founded thereafter are unaffiliated with the original developer. Several of the map, background, character, and enemy sprites were stock RPG Maker XP assets.[8] Adobe ColdFusion and PHP are the primary file extensions found on the servers. Invision Power Board software hosted the game's forums.

Gameplay[edit]

In Gods of Time, players could fight to earn experience, clothing, and gold. Levels are gained by filling an experience bar from completing quests or killing enemies within a difference of ten levels, as is common in many MMORPGs. Clothing items were wearable objects that were often dropped by monsters. Some quests also give out random items of varying grades upon completion. Obtained items could either be sold on the auction page, put on sale on the player's profile, or equipped to boost stat points in skills, such as heat, cold, or poison resistance, as well as hit, damage, crit, avoidance, health regen, and energy regen modifiers.

Players could create or join a party of up to four players where they could fight together and enter/leave battle completely independent of the other party members. Each member would receive the full amount of experience, partial gold upon the completion of the battle (if they were still in the battle when it ended), and a chance for an item drop.

Monetization[edit]

Gems could be bought with fiat currency or earned in-game through time-consuming tasks to identify unidentified (rare) gear, purchase character skill increases, or assist with fortress upgrades. Players could also purchase membership to support the game and receive bonuses, although the membership benefits wouldn't terminate upon cancelling or expiring.
