Godwin Gaza Josiah, known professionally as Godwin, is a Nigerian singer-songwriter, filmmaker and visual artist. He first gained attention as a member of the filmmaking collective The Critics Company, based in Kaduna, Nigeria, before establishing a solo career in music. His debut extended play, Road to Nirvana, was released in 2022 and reissued in 2024, followed by his debut studio album, Atonement, in 2025.[1][2][3]

Early life

Godwin Gaza Josiah was born and raised in Kaduna State, Nigeria. He is the first of three children. He developed an interest in music during childhood, influenced in part by his father's collection of records from different parts of the world. He initially pursued filmmaking with his brothers and other relatives in Kaduna before turning more extensively toward music.[2][3]

Godwin studied chemistry at Kaduna State University before leaving his studies to concentrate on creative work. His experience of grief following the death of his mother in 2017 later became a major influence on his early music.[4][2]

Career

The Critics Company

Godwin is a founding member of The Critics Company, a filmmaking collective formed by young relatives in Kaduna. The group developed its filmmaking practice using inexpensive equipment, smartphones and homemade special effects, producing science-fiction and fantasy films inspired by their interest in cinema.[5][6]

The collective received coverage for its filmmaking techniques and later exhibited its work internationally.[5]

In 2023, The Critics Company presented One Can Only Hope and Wonder at the Museum MMK für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt, Germany. The exhibition addressed the history of the Benin Bronzes, their colonial-era looting and questions surrounding restitution and cultural memory.[6][7]

Godwin directed Ogun Ola: War Is Coming, a short film associated with The Critics Company. The project was produced in association with Morgan Freeman's production company, with Freeman providing narration for the film's trailer.[8][4]

In 2026, Godwin appeared in Crocodile, a documentary directed by Pietra Brettkelly and The Critics Company. The film follows the collective's development over more than a decade and its members' transition from making homemade science-fiction films in Kaduna to exhibiting and screening their work internationally. Crocodile premiered at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival and was subsequently selected for other international film festivals.[9][10]

Music

Godwin began developing his solo music career while continuing to work in filmmaking. He began releasing original music after previously concentrating primarily on film. His early music was shaped by his experience of grief and loss following his mother's death.[1][2]

Godwin's music has been described as combining elements of West African musical traditions with singer-songwriter, soul and pop influences.[11]

Road to Nirvana

Godwin's debut extended play, Road to Nirvana, was first released in 2022 and subsequently reissued in 2024. The project explores grief, loss and healing and was influenced by the death of his mother.[1][11]

The EP was accompanied by visual material connected to Godwin's filmmaking background. The project helped establish his identity as a recording artist while maintaining a connection to his work in film.[2]

In 2024, Godwin performed Home for COLORSxSTUDIOS as part of the A COLORS SHOW series. The performance brought the song to an international audience and was subsequently released as a single.[12][13]

Atonement

Godwin released his debut studio album, Atonement, on 10 October 2025. The album was produced primarily by the German production team KitschKrieg and contains 15 tracks.[14][15]

The album explores romantic relationships, heartbreak, forgiveness and emotional vulnerability. Its production incorporates elements of soul and contemporary African pop music.[16][17]

The album received coverage from German broadcaster WDR COSMO, which selected Atonement as its Album of the Week in October 2025.[17]

The title track incorporates elements drawn from Godwin's childhood experience of church music in northern Nigeria, including the influence of a women's choir in his Baptist church.[16]
