Goggendorf is a village and a cadastral community in the municipality of Sitzendorf an der Schmida in the Hollabrunn district of Lower Austria. The village has 218 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2025). Until the end of 1970, Goggendorf was an independent municipality.
Geography
The village lies north of Sitzendorf an der Schmida, and the river Schmida runs through it.
History
Archaeological finds prove that the area of the village has been settled for a long time. Stone knife blades, stone wedges, arrowheads and spearheads have been found in the area. The entrance to an erdstall can be found in a chamber of a house in Goggendorf.
In the early 17th century, a branch of the Autenrieth family from around Neidlingen moved to Goggendorf, quickly spreading to the surrounding area to. To this day, the family is alive in Goggendorf and beyond. Today, they use variants of the name, such as Authried or Autrieth.
According to an address book, in 1938 the municipality of Goggendorf had two innkeepers, two general stores, a mill, a blacksmith, two seamstresses, three shoemakers, a carpenter, a grocer, a wheelwright, two wine merchants, and several farmers.[2]
On January 1, 1971, as part of the Lower Austrian municipal restructuring, the previously independent municipalities of Braunsdorf, Frauendorf an der Schmida, Goggendorf, and Niederschleinz were incorporated into Sitzendorf an der Schmida.
