Goitom Weldu
Goitom Weldu (also spelled Goitom Woldu) is an Ethiopian filmmaker from Mekelle, Tigray Region.[1] He is best known for winning the 2024 JCS International Young Creatives Award, presented by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, for his short film A Refugee's Plea for Peace.[2][3]
Early life and inspiration
Weldu was born and raised in Mekelle. Originally a painter, he transitioned into filmmaking by teaching himself videography using limited resources, including a mobile phone and a handmade tripod.[4][1] In interviews with international and regional broadcasters, including BBC News Tigrinya, TBS TV, and Dimtsi Weyane, Weldu has discussed using film as a medium to amplify the voices of his community.[3][5][6]
He began his professional career directing music videos before shifting his focus toward documentary filmmaking, specifically documenting the stories of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Tigray.[1][3]
Career and Awards
In 2024, Weldu's one-minute film, A Refugee's Plea for Peace, was selected as one of three global winners for the JCS International Young Creatives Award.[2] The film depicts the lives of children displaced by conflict and was widely covered by major news organizations including the BBC and Dimtsi Weyane.[3][6][4] He received the award at the 52nd International Emmy Awards Gala in New York City on November 25, 2024.[4]
