Goku vs. Superman
Goku vs. Superman[1][2][3] refers to a hypothetical scenario where the fictional characters Goku (the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball franchise) and Superman (a superhero who appears in American comic books published by DC Comics) battle each other. The question of which of these characters would defeat the other has invited analysis from numerous commentators, including Goku's English voice actor Sean Schemmel[4] and the online web series Death Battle.[1]
Those who believe Goku would win cite his ability to teleport at will, the increase in movement speed gained from a power known as Ultra Instinct, and the fact that Superman depends on sunlight to sustain his extraterrestrial abilities. Those who believe Superman would win cite his virtual indestructible nature, being that he does not require food or oxygen, and the fact that he can travel in outer space unprotected.
In 2022, media journalist Mat Jones described the battle as "a fan culture debate for decades at this point – likely because the pair seem so evenly matched in their abilities".[4]
Arguments[edit]
Goku would win[edit]
In 2002, Wizard magazine covered the topic.[1] Wizard concluded that Goku's power known as Super Saiyan would be strong enough to defeat Superman, with a planet-destroying punch being lethal for the latter.[5]
In 2020, Nishid Motwani (writing for Comic Book Resources) argued that Goku's Ultra Instinct power would be strong enough to defeat Superman. He wrote that with this power, Goku's reflexes, speed, and agility would allow him to dodge any attack from Superman, while allowing him to inflict heavy damage.[6]
In 2022, Goku's English voice actor Sean Schemmel stated Goku would win. He cited Goku's Instant Transmission power (which allows Goku to teleport at will), which would allow Goku to teleport Superman to a planet without a sun, thus draining Superman of his power, as his powers require sunlight to remain active.[4]
Superman would win[edit]
In 2013 and 2015, the online web series Death Battle made 2 videos covering the topic, concluding that Superman would win. They argued that, while Goku can overcome any limit, Superman's power is limitless.[1][7][8]
In 2022, media journalist Spencer Connolly (writing for Screen Rant) concluded that Superman would win. He cited Superman's virtual immortality and lack of need for food, water, or oxygen to survive, in contrast to Goku's dependence on food and oxygen.[3]
Parodies[edit]
In 2014, the YouTube web series Epic Rap Battles of History released an episode featuring Goku and Superman engaging in a rap battle.[9]
In 2021, the satirical video game journalism website Hard Drive published an article imagining a scenario where the question of who would win were to be added to ballots for political elections, facetiously suggesting that such an addition would inspire greater turnout among Dragon Ball and DC Comics fans.[10]
