The Golden Chain Theatre is a nonprofit performing arts theater located in Oakhurst, California.

Name[edit]

The theatre was named for the Golden Chain Highway.

History[edit]

Founding[edit]

The Golden Chain Theatre was founded in 1967 by members of the Oakhurst community as a way to attract tourists whilst on their way to Yosemite National Park. Theatrical performances were held at the Oakhurst Community Center, with the initial theme being "19th Century Historical theatre and Melodrama".[1]

Snowline Bowling Alley[edit]

In 1972, the Golden Chain Theatre purchased the Snowline Bowling Alley and converted it into a theatre to house later performances.[1]

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic[edit]

On 17 March 2020, the theatre announced the postponement of all performances through March 31st via Facebook[2]. This decision was later extended multiple times throughout the rest of 2020. On 15 June 2021, the theatre was reopened to the public, with precautionary measures in place to comply with Madera County COVID-19 restrictions.[3] The theatre announced a drive-in melodrama production of Little Orphan Annie[4], set to be shown in the theatre's parking lot every weekend between May 28 and August 1 2021.[5][6][7] James Mierkey, the Golden Chain Theatre musical director was quoted as saying: "This year, we are providing a drive-in melodrama kind of like the old drive-in movie theaters. We converted our parking lot into a drive-in type of venue, and we built an outdoor stage,"[7]
