Main article: Jungkook

Golden Closet is the name of the recording studio that belongs to the vocalist, dancer, rapper, producer, and songwriter Jungkook from the group BTS.

Creation

Since debut days, Jungkook has been on a journey to find his own music colors, reason why he decided to take the platforms used by BTS to share his vocal evolution through music covers and original songs. With time, his covers posted on Soundcloud and Youtube started to receive millions of plays and immediate attention not only by fans but media in South Korea and around the world.[1]

Jungkook started to show interest in participating in the creation and production of BTS music, just like BTS’ rapline Rap Monster, SUGA, and J-HOPE, who count with their own studio in their company Big Hit,[2][3] but because of his studies he didn’t have the time to fully participate in the production of albums. That’s how he decided to create his own recording space where he could practice with his covers, improve his English, and learn to use instruments like electric piano, electric guitar, and drums to create his own beats using MIDI.[4]

First Golden Closet studio

As his first mini studio, he chose his own closet in BTS' dorm in Seoul. He chose his room because it was a small, isolated, and quiet space, ideal for recording sound. Jungkook called his recording space Golden Closet, mixing his “Golden Maknae” nickname and the first place where he started to record music, his own closet.[5]

Singer Charlie Puth praised him for his cover of Puth's song We Don’t Talk Anymore on Twitter, receiving the attention from important media like Naver[6], Teen VOGUE[7] and ELLE Magazine[8]

Jungkook's image is frequently praised by the public, especially for gestures with fans and staff from different events. One of the most known and viral moments is when he was caught being the only artist helping Idol Star Athletics Championships' staff to clean after the event.[9][10] Jungkook has also gained attention for his "Manner Hands", a term used in South Korea to describe the courteous placement of a person's hands out of respect for someone else,[11] in this case with female artists like Halsey and American journalists while BTS was promoting in United States in 2017.[12][13]

Jungkook graduated with honorable mention for his works spreading Korean culture around the world and he was publicly congratulated by important governmental entities like the police of Seoul.[14]

With only 19 years old, Jungkook became the youngest artist part of the list of best-selling artists surpassing one million physical sales and getting a platinum album in South Korea with the studio album Wings released by BTS in 2016, which recorded more than 1.5 Million physical album sales..[15] Jungkook is also the youngest artist registered to sell 1 Million copies with one single album with the mini album Love Yourself: Her.

Jungkook is the youngest artist among all the Korean acts to enter to the Billboard 200 and HOT 100 charts in United States peaking in #7 for album sales with the mini album Love Yourself: Her[16][17] and 67 for singles with the title track DNA.[18] Jungkook is also the youngest Korean artist to enter official United Kingdom charts in 2016 with the album Wings and once again in 2017 with Love Yourself: Her peaking #14 on albums charts.[19][20] With 19 years old, Jungkook became the youngest Korean artist to ever attend Billboard Music Awards and win an award with BTS’ Social 50 Award in May 23, 2017.[21]

Jungkook also entered the TIME Magazine list of musical artist most mentioned in 2016[22] and was recognized by Billboard as the most popular k-pop artist on Tumblr on Summer 2017.[23]

In 2017, Jungkook was No.1 in the poll of magazine in Taiwan My Colors, the favorite Korean artist by Taiwanese audience[24].

Jungkook holds the record of boy group member which fanbase has most followers on Twitter with more than 1.2 million.[25] He also holds the record as a male artist whose fancam has the most views on Youtube with more than 10 million on his fancam released by the official M2 channel by the show MCountdown, record achieved in just three weeks proving his popularity around the globe.[26] Jungkook is also the artist with more views in the app V LIVE created by Naver and specialized in live stream Korean idol activities, he holds the record for a solo live stream with more than 2.5M views which proves the positive reception he has as an artist around the world.[27]

New Golden Closet Studio

In November 2017, it was confirmed on an interview for the American portal ETOnline[28] that Jungkook finally got his own studio recording inside their company Big Hit, where he started to take part in the production of BTS’ music releases and his future solo music, filming, and activities.

Recording Process

On an interview for Teen VOGUE, Jungkook shared that in his process to create covers he usually records multiple times until he's satisfied with the result, and he usually waits for the moment BTS isn't promoting music to release them.[29]

Jungkook is not fluent in English, reason why his process to create a cover takes longer time.[30] On a live stream for the app VLIVE created by Naver, Jungkook revealed to his more than 3 million viewers[31] that once he chooses a song, he researches the lyrics to study them word by word, then he focuses on the pronunciation, then he records the song multiple times.[31] Jungkook usually gets help in the mastering and editing of his cover by Big Hit producers PDogg and Slow Rabbit.

Golden Closet Film

On November 8, 2017, Jungkook released a self-filmed and edited video project from his travel to Japan with BTS' member Jimin in which he shared footage from their vacations. The credits of the video mention the initials G.C.F for Golden Closet Film. G.C.F in Japan is his is the first film project made in his new recording studio.[32][33]

Public Recognition

His first work released arranged in Golden Closet as his official studio is the cover of Lost Stars by Adam Levine of Maroon 5 uploaded October 3 of 2015 on BTS' official blog via Youtube and Soundcloud.[34] The cover includes in the credits: Performed by 정국 Vocal Arrangement by 정국 @ Golden Closet.[34] His first cover with Golden Closet counts with more than 3.5 Million plays on Soundcloud and more than 9 Million plays on Youtube.[35]

Singer Charlie Puth praised Jungkook for his cover of Puth's song We Don’t Talk Anymore via Twitter,[36] receiving the attention from important media like Naver[37], Teen VOGUE[38], Hollywood LIFE[39], ELLE Magazine[40] and Billboard[41].

The entertainment website Chosun Biz on Naver,[42] informed, according to analysis on Chartmetric[43], there was a sudden drastic increase in followers on BTS' SoundCloud account before the mini album Love Yourself: Her was released. Chartmetric's CEO Sung M. Cho stated to the Chosun Biz the increase happened after Jungkook released his cover of 2U by David Guetta and Justin Bieber to celebrate his birthday on September 1, 2017.[42] Park Wonik from Chosun Biz noted the huge reception Jungkook's cover had over the media amplified and sparked more interest for the new album from English based fans.[42][44]

BTS' debut in the Canadian radio was thanks to Jungkook's cover of Justin Bieber and David Guetta's 2U which Jungkook released as a gift to his fans to celebrate his birthday on September 1, 2017, and was played on KISS FM radio Canada[45][46][47]
