Golden Melody Chartbusters (Chinese: 金曲龍虎榜) is a weekly music variety show broadcast by Chinese Television System Inc. (CTS, 中華電視公司) every Saturday afternoon, produced by TransWorld Television Production Company Ltd. (映畫傳播). It first aired on September 30th, 1989 and ended on February 28th, 1998.[1][2][3]
Abstract
“Golden Melody Chartbusters” is a collaborative entertainment program that combines popular music and variety shows, co-hosted by the Min Sheng Bao(民生報), the Taiwan Recording Industry Association (台灣區唱片工業同業公會), the Consumers' Foundation, Chinese Taipei (中華民國消費者文教基金會), and Chinese Television System Inc.. Each episode costs up to NTD 2.5 million to produce.[4][5] The ranking list is compiled by a combination of public postcard voting and sales figures, with each accounting for half of the total. Min Sheng Bao publishes a voting form called "The Reader's Choice for the Golden Melody Chartbusters" daily, which voters cut out and paste on the back of a postcard. Each person is limited to one vote to prevent ballot stuffing. At the beginning of each episode, the host announces the top 20 Mandarin songs (self-tabulated), top 5 Taiwanese songs (self-tabulated), and top 5 English songs (referenced from the Billboard chart) of the week. The annual Top 10 Idol Artists and Sales Awards ceremony is held. In the early days of the Taiwanese music market, whether they were domestic or foreign singers or actors, they all promoted their new albums or works on the "Golden Melody Chart" due to the thriving Taiwanese record market. However, with the advent of the Internet era in 1998, the record industry faced challenges, and the 10-year run of the "Golden Melody Chartbusters" came to an end. This also marked a new turning point for Taiwanese variety shows and pop music in the 1980s and 1990s.[6][7]
When "Golden Melody Chartbusters" first aired, it was hosted by Hugua Hu[8], with Du Wen[9], Fang Di, Pei-Lien, and Tony Taylor serving as the chart announcers, and the mascot Little Elephant Team as the assistant hosts.[10][11] In the first episode, Monique Lin(林慧萍) introduced the computerized voting system and the criteria for disqualifying invalid ballots, such as those with torn edges, illegible markings, or extraneous writing. The theme song "Golden Melody Chartbusters," composed by David Wong (黃大煒)[12], was performed in both Mandarin and English versions, with Hugua Hu and Little Elephant Team singing the former and David Wong himself singing the latter in the first episode, accompanied by Kung Kiang (孔鏘) on an electronic keyboard. In the mid-1990s, the hosts were replaced by Hugua Hu and Pei-Lien.
After the conclusion of Golden Melody Chartbusters, it was succeeded by Happy 9 (歡樂龍虎榜)[13], which was also produced by the same company, namely, the TransWorld Television Production Company Ltd. During the trial period of the television station Top TV (高點電視台), a version of Golden Melody Chartbusters was aired under the name 'Golden Melody Chartbusters Highlights.' The official YouTube channel of TransWorld Television Production Company Ltd. provides the official highlights of the Golden Melody Chartbusters, but it may not necessarily include the subtitles that were originally aired on CTS."

Golden Melody Chartbusters and Happy 9 announce weekly rankings by randomly sampling 300 households and calculating sales performance based on both reader voting and record sales surveys, with total scores calculated proportionally to generate the annual overall ranking list.

Influence
In 1990, singer Michael Huang An's album "Michael Huang An's Innocent Years" included the song "His Mother Said" with the lyrics "Young people care about the Golden Melody Chartbusters, middle-aged people worry about whether they are erectile dysfunction."[14] On August 31, 2016, on the Chinese talk show "The Jinxing Show," former CCTV host Ma Dong revealed that he was inspired to become a host after watching the "Golden Melody Chartbusters."
