The Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Visual Effects was an award formerly presented at the annual Golden Raspberry Awards. Originally awarded to what was deemed the previous calendar year's greatest underachievement concerning visual effects, whether they be computer-generated or practically-constructed special effects in a motion picture, the award was only presented twice[1] with no reason for its discontinuation announced. It was the second award presented by the Razzies to be discontinued (following Worst Musical Score).[2]
History[edit]
The category was introduced for the first time on the seventh Razzie preliminary ballot, and the award itself was first presented in March 1987 by John J. B. Wilson[3] at the 7th Golden Raspberry Awards (naming the worst films of 1986).[4] It was additionally presented the following year at the 8th Golden Raspberry Awards, where it was referred to as the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Special Visual Effects[5][6], and following which it was discontinued for unspecified reasons. Unlike other categories at the Razzies, only three eligible films were nominated each year in this category, whereas typically five films would be selected as nominees in other categories.
Both of the films which received the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Visual Effects were also nominated for Worst Picture (the former winning that as well).[4][5]
