Golems of the Red Planet is a surf rock band from Akron, Ohio. Their repertoire comes exclusively from John Zorn's Masada songbooks. The Golems were founded in 2019 by Harvey Gold (guitar), Matt Reese (cello), Mark Allender (bass), and Bob Ethington (drums).
Zorn has described his Masada project as his "personal answer to what new Jewish music is"[1]. Masada tunes have been interpreted into genres as diverse as jazz, solo cello, and heavy hardcore[2]. Surf rock, meanwhile, has often come to include Jewish and Middle Eastern tonalities[3]. The Golems recognized a natural connection between Zorn's Masada project and the genre of surf rock and began developing their repertoire with that in mind.
Golems of the Red Planet began recording in July of 2019[4], releasing two singles before rehearsal and recording ceased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rehearsal and recording are expected to resume once the pandemic subsides.
