Google's response to ChatGPT
OpenAI's launch of ChatGPT in November 2022 prompted an unprecedented level of response from Google. ChatGPT, a chatbot built on the GPT family of large language models (LLM), gained worldwide attention and became immensely popular, sending Google executives into a panic due to ChatGPT's potential threat to Google Search, the company's search engine and core business. In the ensuing months, the company released Bard, a chatbot of their own, in addition to a wide range of generative AI features in its products. Commentators have described Google as playing catch-up to OpenAI and Microsoft, with whom OpenAI struck a partnership, as well as starting an AI "arms race" with Microsoft.
