Google Bard
Google has announced Bard, a competitor to ChatGPT[1] that uses Google's own Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA).
How it works
Similar to ChatGPT, Google Bard is an AI-based chatbot that can answer a variety of questions in a conversational way. Google claims that Bard provides original and high-quality answers by using online resources.[1]
Google's chatbot is powered by Transformer, a neural network model, and LaMDA, Google's language model. Interestingly, both Transformer and the GPT-3 language model form the basis of ChatGPT. Transformer was developed and released by Google Research in 2017.
Terms of use
At the moment, only a few people have access to Google Bard, and the public is not yet able to test it. However, Google is working on a much more power-efficient "lightweight" version of LaMDA.
The story
Before a conference, Google executives called ChatGPT Code Red because the AI-based platform had received a positive response from users around the world. In a blog post[1], Google announced that it would make Bard available to "trusted testers" before opening it to the public in the coming weeks.
Alphabet's shares fell 7.6 per cent in late trading on Wall Street. This is the biggest drop since 26 October. The loss wiped more than $100 billion (US$140 billion) off Alphabet's market value[2], caused by a demonstration Google posted on Twitter for giving an incorrect answer about the discoveries of the James Webb Space Telescope.[2][3]
