Gorditas Doña Tota
Gorditas Doña Tota is a restaurant chain is an international restaurant chain, operating in Mexico and the United States. It operates over 200 restaurants in more than 60 cities.[1] Periódico Vanguardia described it as one of Mexico's 32 most popular brands.[1]
History[edit]
Gorditas Doña Tota started in 1952 when Carlota Murillo of Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas began selling gorditas on the street, from a cart on the sidewalk.[1]
In 1995, the company agreed a deal with Soriana, a large grocery chain, to open locations in every food court of every Soriana market in Mexico.[2]
2010s[edit]
By 2011 Gorditas Doña Tota had more than 100 restaurants, including in the United States[3] By February 2012 the company claimed more than 200 locations in Mexico, and 6 locations in Texas. The main outlet in Dallas.[4]
In 2013 the FEMSA group acquired an 80% holding in the Mexican arm of the company for $120 MDD, their interest being limited to operations within Mexico.[5] Operations within the United States remain in the hands of the original business owners.[6] The company operates as a subsidiary of Femsa Comercio S.A. de C.V.[7]
As of 2017 the chain claims more than 200 restaurants in 60 Mexican cities and towns.[1][8]

It all began more than 50 years ago when Carlota Murillo started selling her homemade street sandwiches out of a cart in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, and now there are more than 100 restaurants in Mexico and a handful in Texas.
