Gordon A. Allen (July 13, 1918 – February 19, 2013) was a mine accountant and politician from the Northwest Territories, Canada.
Allen moved to Yellowknife, NWT with his family (wife Merrill and daughter Donna) in 1946 to serve as chief accountant at the Giant Mine, a position he held from October 1946 to January 1957. During his time in Yellowknife he took an interest in civic politics, serving as a director on the local hospital board, Anglican Church, public school board, Chamber of Commerce, and the early Yellowknife Town Council. He was elected to the Yellowknife Municipal Council in the November 1953 election, a position effective January 1, 1954. [2] His appointment as 'deputy mayor' guaranteed him as successor to mayor John G. McNiven, who resigned his position in October 1954; therefore, the responsibilities of mayor fell onto Allen, who completed McNiven's term of service to December 31, 1955.
Although Allen was an un-elected mayor of Yellowknife,[3] the city's town hall was built during his tenure.[4]
Gordon Allen left Yellowknife in January 1957 for New Jersey where he accepted a job with Atlas Copco Drilling.[5] He worked as accountant for Atlas Copco from 1957–1969, and then for Lacana Mining in Toronto from 1969-1984 when he retired. He died in Toronto in 2013. [6]
