Gordon Mitchell (born 3 April 1953) is a South African religious educator and emeritus professor of Religion and Intercultural Education at the University of Hamburg. His research focuses on religious education, intercultural education, and peace education. He has taught and conducted research in South Africa, Germany, and Jordan.

Early life and education

Mitchell obtained a degree in religious education from Rhodes University in 1977. He earned his doctorate at Heidelberg University in 1990.[1]

Academic career

After completing his studies, Mitchell taught at the University of Cape Town and the University of South Africa. From 2000 to 2019 he was Professor of Religion and Intercultural Education at the University of Hamburg, Faculty of Education.[1]

After his retirement, he was appointed Herder Professor for Intercultural Studies at the German Jordanian University in Amman, Jordan.[2]

Research

Mitchell's research focuses on religious education in pluralistic societies, intercultural education, peace education, and aesthetic approaches in educational processes. He has been involved in several international projects, including the Art Peace Project and Spirals of Dialogue, which address peace education and intercultural dialogue.[3]

He has also served as spokesperson of the Hamburg Peace Education Initiative and participated in international collaborations in countries such as Tanzania, China, and Jordan.[1]
