Gordon Skalleberg (born 1960, Fredrikstad, Norway) is a contemporary artist living in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Early life and education[edit]

Gordon Skalleberg grew up in Stockholm, Sweden, with a Norwegian father, a German mother and a younger brother. In his teens, he became interested in photography and proficient in the darkroom. In 1973, his father started the industrial manufacturing company Skaltek AB that makes cable components and machinery. During secondary school, Skalleberg began to work at Skaltek. After completing his mandatory military service, he started his career at Skaltek. He rose to President of Skaltek.[1] Apart from all the normal duties in top management, Skalleberg taught himself graphic design and took on the responsibility for all visual promotion. He evolved from manual graphic design to fluency in digital software.

Art[edit]

In his forties, seeking a more creative career, Skalleberg left the company and transitioned to full-time artist.[2] [3] His main focus began on faces and eyes, painting with oils, mostly on plywood panels that he builds. He was inspired to paint on wood panels when he saw Swedish contemporary artist Rolf Hansson's[4] work at the Dunker Culture House (Dunker kulturhus). In 2012, Skalleberg and his wife relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico.[5] This move stimulated new imagery in his artwork - semi-abstract landscape-style depictions that draw on the quintessential visual features of the Southwest. His technique of oil on wood lends itself to his landscapes and his minimalistic line paintings in that the grain of the wood serves as a pictorial element of the paintings. Skalleberg also makes laser cut steel sculptures that are suspended from the ceiling and lit with spotlights, creating duplicate shadows on the wall.[6][7][8]

Exhibitions[edit]

Exhibitions include Marietta Cobb Museum of Art[9] Yellowstone Art Museum,[10] Urban Window Gallery, Malmö!, Sweden;[11][12] Marin Museum of Contemporary Art,[13][14] High Desert Museum,[15] Edward Montgomery Fine Art[16] and Konstrundan Studio Tour (2015 – present).[17][18]
