Early life and education
Goutam Sengupta completed his schooling at Hindu School, Kolkata, where he was recognized for outstanding academic performance.
He obtained a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Jadavpur University in 1974. He later completed a Post‑Graduate Diploma in Business Management from XLRI Jamshedpur in 1981.

Career
Early industrial career
Sengupta began his professional career at Tata Motors in 1974 and later held the position of Head of Ancillary Development at the Jamshedpur plant, where he was responsible for industrial systems, contract management and operational processes over a 12‑year period.
He later joined Philips in 1987 and rose to the position of General Manager. His responsibilities included supply chain management and operations within a multinational corporate environment.
Public sector and corporate leadership
In 1999, Sengupta transitioned into leadership roles in public‑ and private‑sector organizations. He served as President of Webel Consumer Electronics in 1999 and later as Chairman of Westinghouse Saxby Farmer Ltd between 2009 and 2014, a Government of West Bengal undertaking.
He subsequently joined the Videocon Group, holding positions including Director and Vice President for approximately 17 years. His work covered infrastructure, manufacturing operations, and industrial initiatives.
