Background[edit]

Following the release of his debut album Aromanticism, Sumney released the EP Black in Deep Red, 2014 in summer 2018.[2] In December 2018, Sumney announced on Twitter that his sophomore album would be released in 2019.[3] The album has been described as a "conceptual patchwork about grayness", with Sumney stating that "grayness is a metaphor for being in between extremes...I wanted to really claim that space and name that space."[4] The album features collaborations with musicians Oneohtrix Point Never, Thundercat, and Adult Jazz. Actors Ezra Miller and Michaela Coel, as well as authors Michael Chabon and Taiye Selasi made further contributions to the album.[4][5]

Release and promotion[edit]

The album's release date and title were first unveiled on November 14, 2019, along with the lead single "Virile" and an accompanying music video directed by Sumney himself.[6] The second single "Polly" was released on December 13, 2019 and was named "Best New Track" by Pitchfork.[7][8] A third single, "Me in 20 Years", followed on January 6, 2020.[9] "Cut Me" was released on February 7, 2020 as the album's fourth single.[10] A music video for "Cut Me", also directed by Sumney, premiered on March 31, 2020. The video has been described by Sumney as "a satirization of the medical industrial complex".[11]

Live performances[edit]

græ was supported by a residency and installation at the Bootleg Theatre in Los Angeles.[12] Sumney performed the fourth single "Cut Me" on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in February 2020, marking his TV debut.[13]
