Early life

Bertie was raised in Montréal and became active in the local electronic and rave scene in his late teens and later relocated to Toronto in 2007.

Career

Thunderheist (2005–2010)

Bertie formed the electro-rap duo Thunderheist with Isis Salam. The group gained international attention with their single "Jerk It", which appeared in films including The Wrestler (2008). Thunderheist was nominated for a Juno Award for Electronic Album of the Year.[1][2]

Nautiluss (2011–present)

After Thunderheist, Bertie launched his solo project Nautiluss, exploring techno, UK bass, and leftfield electronic music. Nautiluss has released multiple EPs and singles on labels such as Ghostly International / Spectral Sound, Turbo Recordings, Hemlock Recordings, and 3024. He has performed live at festivals and iconic venues worldwide.[3][4]

Other Production (2011–present)

Bertie contributed as a songwriter and producer for other artists, including Allie X. He is credited on her EP CollXtion I (2015) and the single "Catch" (2015).[5][6]

Musical style and reception

Bertie’s work as Nautiluss has received critical attention from Resident Advisor:

  • In its review of the 2011 single “Ultraviolet ft. Lord Skywave” / “Blue Monday” (Hemlock Recordings, HEK012), Resident Advisor described the title track as “a beguiling wisp of a tune that drifts like fallen leaves and flickers like a jack‑o‑lantern’s grin” and noted that the “groove is a minimal affair… its most pronounced feature is an apple‑crisp handclap that crunches with a decidedly Hemlock feel.”[7]
  • The 2012 single Alpha was praised for "letting in a little more light and melody … that’s what makes his particular brand of techno so exciting".[8]
  • The Habitat EP (2012) retained "the same wonderfully on‑the‑fly sound manipulation that made his earlier work so appealing".[9]
  • By 2015, Bertie explored house with Aerochrome, described as "brighter and friendlier than his techno‑oriented output".[10]
  • His contribution to the compilation Ghostly Swim 2 (2015) was highlighted as evidence of his status as a "promising act".[11]

Other work

Bertie is credited as a songwriter with SOCAN and BMI for Thunderheist tracks, including works appearing in films and television shows.[12]
