Graziella Garbalosa (December 10, 1896 - 1977) was a Cuban avant-garde writer whose novel, "La gozadora de dolor" (1922),[1] and other novels looked at eroticism, naturalism, and avant-garde techniques. She also is credited with helping teach Eusebia Cosme about declamation after she was barred from participating in Cuban theatre because of her race.

Early life[edit]

Born in Santiago de Vegas, Cuba, she was born into an affluent family that put heavy emphasis on education. She was a lover of theatre and spent her formative years going to public school in Santiago de Vegas, where she learned piano, declamation, and theatre. At sixteen years old, she was married to a notable Cuban intellectual, Mariano Albaladejo y Malberti, which whom she had three children, the first of whom died very young. The pair divorced in 1921 after five years of marriage, and her two surviving children lived with her until her death. [2]

Career[edit]

When the avant-garde movement came to Cuba in the 1920s and 1930s, she was an active member in the movement, which her work highlighted. She published a volume of avant-garde poetry in 1920 called "La juguetería del amor" (The Toy Store of Love). In 1922, a year after her divorce, she published "La gozadora del dolor" (The Joy of Pain) for which she is most known. The novela covers themes of extreme pain, trauma, and melodrama of the era and highlights the struggle of people of the century.[3] She published her second novel, "El relicario: Novela de costumbres cubanas" (The Reliquary: Novel of Cuban Customs) a year later. Due to the political protest featured in her second novel, she was exiled to Mexico, where she published her third novel, "Una mujer que sabe mirar" (A woman that knows to see) in 1927. She returned to Cuba in 1928, where she attended university in La Universidad de Habana.
