Great Burn Brewing Company is a craft brewery located in Missoula, Montana. It was founded on April, 29th 2013 by brothers Mike and Greg Howard. Located on 2230 McDonald Ave, Great Burn is one of Missoula’s newest craft breweries and exemplifies the explosion of craft brewing in the United States during the second decade of the twenty-first century.[1]
History[edit]
Great Burn Brewery was opened in 2013 by brothers Mike and Greg Howard, and Greg’s wife Diana. The family trio would later be joined by friend Jennifer Wright, creating a four-person ownership team. The brewery was created by the Howard brothers as a tribute to their late brother Chad. The concept for the brewery, from the name “Great Burn” to the various decor pieces hanging on the walls, stems directly from Chad’s life as a firefighter and Forest Service employee.[2] Chad was an early pioneer of craft brewing and his taste later influenced his brothers. Mike has a lengthy history in the brewing business and has previously worked for the Montana breweries, Big Sky, KettleHouse, Bayern, Bitterroot, Blacksmith, and in San Diego at Stone Brewing.[3] The Howard brothers brew in a five-barrel system. The small barrel size allows more control over batches rather than a traditional seven or ten-barrel system. Great Burn also employs a West Coast brewing style defined by high levels of hops and a unique bitter taste.[4] Great Burn is the only craft brewery located in Missoula’s south side and frequently hosts community nights.[5] Great Burn has recently begun offering their beer at local establishments in Missoula with the hope to eventually bottle, can and distribute their beer.
Products[edit]
Great Burn has four flagship beers, along with six seasonal beers that rotate frequently. The most popular flagship beer produced by Great Burn is the aptly named the "Great Burn IPA." The Seasonal Beers produced by Great Burn are prone to weekly change, and brew master Mike Howard experiments with a wide variety of ingredients. Prior seasonal beers have included, Chai Brown Ale, Flathead Cherry Belgian and Honey Ginger Lemongrass.[6] Great Burn produces an estimated 500 barrels of beer per year.[7]
