The Great North Midget League (GNML) is a midget AAA ice hockey league located in Northern Ontario. It was founded in 1986 and contains 7 teams: Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves, North Bay Trappers, Kapuskasing Flyers, New Liskeard Cubs, Timmins Majors, Sault Ste. Marie North Stars, And Sudbury Wolves Minor Midgets.

History[edit]

The Great North midget League was founded in 1986 and is one of the leagues that belongs to the national league which runs the national tournament called the Telus Cup, which is hosted in a chosen city every year in April. Only the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves, Sault Ste. Marie North Stars (now the Greyhounds), and the New Liskeard Cubs have qualified for the Telus Cup and only the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves have won it in 2008. Sudbury will host the 2018 Telus Cup which will be played April 23-29 2018. The North Stars are the most successful club. They have won nine times in history. The Nickel Capitals are the recent champions. They have won seven times and have won three times in a row plus the 2018 win.

Kapuskasing Flyers[edit]

The Kapuskasing Flyers are from Kapuskasing, Ontario and have no championships. They were the finalist in 2011, 2013, and 2016. They were founded in 1990.

New Liskeard Cubs[edit]

The New Liskeard Cubs are from Temiskaming Shores, Ontario and have 2 championships. In the early years of the GNML, the cubs won 2 titles both in 1996 and 1997. They were also the central Midget AAA champions in those two years, and were the Telus Cup finalists in 1997. They were founded in 1953.

Sault Ste. Marie North Stars[edit]

The Sault Ste. Marie North Stars are from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and have won 9 championships. They hold the record for most GNML titles won with 9 titles in 1999, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2015. They have also hosted the Telus Cup twice but never won the central Midget AAA champions and have not won or made it to the finals in the Telus Cup. They were founded in 1986.

Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves[edit]

The Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves are from Sudbury, Ontario and have won 7 championships. They have won 7 remarkable championships in 1998, 2003, 2008, 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018. They have hosted the Telus Cup once in 1998 and will host it this year on April 23-29, 2018. They are also the only GNML team that has won the Telus Cup in 2008 and were finalists in 1998. They also affiliate the Sudbury Wolves. They were founded in 1986.

The Sudbury Wolves Minor Midgets are from Sudbury, Ontario and have won no championships. They are the minor midget AAA team from Sudbury with the Nickel Capital Wolves being the major midgets. They have not won or qualified for the GNML finals. They were founded in 2015.

The Timmins Majors are from Timmins, Ontario and have won 2 championships. In the Majors history, they have won 2 GNML titles in 2000, and 2002, and in 2002, they won the central Midget AAA championships advancing them to the Telus Cup, which they failed to qualify for the semifinals and came 5 out of 6 in the round robin with a record of 2-3-0. They were founded in 1980.
