Great Southern River is a southern rock band from Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.[1]
History
Name origin
The band's name choice was officially stated:
The name 'Great Southern River' came from two different roads that perfectly cross each other, at least as intended by this band. The first road is the one that leads back home. We're from the southernmost state in Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul (which can literally be translated to English as Great Southern River). The second road takes us through regions where the musical genres we bring together in our songs are from: the southern USA, especially regions around and near the southern half of the Mississippi River (Mississippi also means Great River).[2]
Foundation
The band was initially conceived as a side project by guitarist/songwriter Chris Fiorin at the end of 2013 while he was involved in other musical projects. However, wanting to focus on this genre, he ended those other projects and officially founded Great Southern River on February 13, 2014.
2014–2017
The band began rehearsing as Great Southern River. Line-up changes occurred frequently, hindering the band's consistent evolution. In 2016, Fiorin decided to temporarily suspend Great Southern River, but continued working on songwriting.
2018–present
Fiorin sought to revive the band and invited longtime friend and musical collaborator Gabriel Severo to rejoin. Severo became the band's bassist and main producer/engineer. Seeking a vocalist, Fiorin was impressed by the lead singer of an Allman Brothers cover band and contacted Marco Esteban, who joined the band.
They began working on an album. Fiorin completed the songs, and pre-production started by the end of 2018. Recordings took place throughout 2019, featuring guest musicians Mateus Mussatto and Cachaça Vicari Bento. The final touches, including keyboards by Luks Diesel and additional backing vocals by Manuela Mesquita, were added towards the end of the year and beginning of 2020.
The band's first album, Great Southern River, was released on April 17, 2020.
Musical style and influences
As a southern rock/blues rock band, Great Southern River draws significant influence from The Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top. Also influential were classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Whitesnake, The Beatles, The Who, Rolling Stones, and Grateful Dead.
