The Great Valley Flyer is an express commuter train that operates on SEPTA's Paoli/Thorndale Line (formerly R5). In the morning, the train travels from the line's terminus, Thorndale, towards Center City, Philadelphia. In the late afternoon, the train travels from Center City back to Thorndale. During both of these trips the train stops at only 9 stations, expressing past 13.
During the early wave of COVID-19, SEPTA discontinued all service past Malvern.[1] In addition to cancelling all express trains. Some express trains have since been brought back and service has been restored to Thorndale, however the Great Valley Flyer still is not scheduled.[2]
Name Origin
The Great Valley Flyer was made the only remaining named train operating on SEPTA Regional Rail in 2013.[3] The train is named after the area in Chester County it travels through, most commonly known as Great Valley or sometimes known as Chester Valley.
Operation
Equipment
The Great Valley Flyer, under normal circumstances is made up of 6 passenger cars pulled or pushed by an Siemens ACS-64. Depending on the direction and whether the locomotive is pushing or pulling, a Comet I cab car will be on the front or the back of the train. In addition to the cab car, the train features one other Comet I car which features center doors for use at high level platforms. Lastly, the remaining 5 cars are made up of Comet II push/pull sets.
