Greater Phoenix Economic Council
The Greater Phoenix Economic Council (GPEC) is a non-profit economic development organization aimed at attracting and growing quality businesses and advocating for the competitiveness of the Greater Phoenix region in Arizona. GPEC operates as a 501c3 nonprofit[1] under a public-private partnership[2] involving member communities[3] and private-sector investors.[4]
History
In December 1988, an article in Barron's predicted economic challenges for the Phoenix area. In response, Phoenix Mayor Terry Goddard convened an economic summit, leading to the creation of an investment promotion agency. By June 1989, several communities including Chandler, Glendale, Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe agreed to a regional economic development plan.[5]
The Greater Phoenix Economic Council was established in August 1989. Ioanna Morfessis served as its first President and CEO until 1997, followed by Rick L. Weddle from 1997 to 2004, and Barry Broome from 2004 to 2014. The current President and CEO is Chris Camacho.[6]
GPEC Communities
GPEC now represents 22 member communities and Maricopa and Pinal counties.[3]
