The GreenDEC is a series of diesel–electric multiple unit (DEMU) railcars designed, manufactured, and marketed by the Japanese rolling stock manufacturer Kawasaki Railcar Manufacturing.
Background and design
Kawasaki Heavy Industries states that approximately 30% of Japan's rail network is unelectrified, much of which is operated using railcars with hydraulic transmissions. While mechanically simpler than diesel–electric powertrains, these often require bespoke parts such as transmissions.[1] Diesel–electric railcars consequently gained prominence due to parts commonality with electric multiple units (EMUs).[2]
In January 2026, electrical equipment manufacturer Toyo Denki announced that it was selected to provide various components for the GreenDEC, including traction systems and auxiliary power supplies.[3]
Operators
Amagi Railway
In October 2025, the third-sector railway operator Amagi Railway announced its plans to procure eight GreenDEC cars, designated as ARe500 (ARe500形), to replace its pre-existing fleet of AR300 and AR400 railcars introduced between 2001 and 2006.[4][2] Amagi Railway plans to introduce one ARe500 car per year.[4] The ARe500 is scheduled to enter revenue service on 1 April 2026, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the railway's opening.[5]
Tenryū Hamanako Railroad
Tenryū Hamanako Railroad announced its plans in December 2025 to introduce GreenDEC cars, designated as THG100 (THG100形).[6] The first THG100 railcar, THG101, was delivered from the Kawasaki Railcar Manufacturing plant in Hyōgo in January 2026,[7] and the fleet entered revenue service from 14 March 2026.[8]
