On June 28, 2026 Iraqi special forces raided the green zone in Baghdad to arrest several politicians over financial corruption per judicial orders.[1]
Background
The Green Zone is a 10 km2 (3.9 sq mi) area in the Karkh district of central Baghdad, Iraq. It is the seat of the government of Iraq, home to government offices, ministries, state institutions, diplomatic missions, and palaces.[2]
Operation
On the early hours of June 28, 2026, units of the Iraqi Counterterrorism Service (CTS) and the Iraqi military conducted raids in the green zone to arrest politicians that are alleged to have connections to financial corruption cases in the country and the raid was order by judicial orders.[3] multiple sources of the operation said that several senior politicians, advisers and sitting lawmakers were among those taken into custody but no names were released on who was arrested or how many people were arrested [4]
The raids followed confessions from former Deputy Oil Minister Adnan al-Jumaili.[5]
Aftermath
The operation arrested 47 people including 12 current lawmakers, one former legislator, one former advisor of former Prime Minister Shia al-Sudani, and a high-ranking oil ministry official, Some of the arrested lawmakers came from al-Sudani’s Shiite political bloc and others from the Azm Alliance, an influential Sunni party.[6]
The campaign is seen as part of the anti corruption campaign launch by Prime MinisterAli al-Zaidi[7]
