Greg Chako (born June 12, 1958) is an American jazz guitarist, composer, & educator. He has released thirteen albums and has been the subject of a documentary called An American Cat in the Lion City. He played with artists like Junior Cook, Bill Hardman, and Bobby Watson.[1]
Early Life
He was born on June 12, 1958, in Cincinnati, Ohio and began his musical education at 9, learning to play the accordion.[2]
He soon switched to the guitar and quickly developed a talent for the instrument. After just one year of guitar lessons, he won second place in the American Guild of Music competition.[3]
Chako later attended Berklee College of Music, earning an associate degree in Music Performance and making the Dean's list.[4]
Career
Chako moved to Hong Kong in 1992 and resumed his professional career as a musician and promoter. He played in Broadway musicals, performed with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and booked regular concert series for top-tier clients.[5] In 1994, he recorded his first album, Everything I Love, The Greg Chako Trio Live, Live at the Captain's Bar.[1]
After his wife’s death, Chako recorded albums, including Where We Find Ourselves, Two's Company, Three's a Crowd, Paint a Picture, Tell a Story, and Everybody's Got a Name.[6]
He moved back to the United States in 2009 to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and business, followed by a Master's in music.[7]
Chako then earned admission to a Doctor of Musical Arts program at The Eastman School of Music. He released his first solo guitar album, My World on Six Strings in 2013.[8]
He has recently signed with New Jersey-based label Raining Music, a jazz subsidiary of Mint 400 Records.[9]
On April 8, 2022, Raining Music began re-releasing Chako's entire catalog, along with new albums currently in production.[10] The first album scheduled for re-release is Integration, originally released as two volumes, which have now been combined into one.[8]
He also spearheaded his new recordings. Friends, Old & New is the first of three albums that released in summer 2023.[7]
