Greg Nelson (born, February 10, 1965) is a martial artist & UFC coach who operates the Academy MN in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Coach Nelson has trained many successful fighters from their first day of MMA all the way to the championship, including former UFC lightweight Champion Sean Sherk, former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar, and UFC Middleweight Champion Champion Dave Menne.

Biography and Career[edit]

Greg Nelson began wrestling & gymnastics as a youth. He achieved all american honors for both sports while in high school He was offered a scholarship for both to the University of Minnesota. After flipping a coin to decide which sport to continue, he choose wrestling. [3] While still in college he began to study martial arts like muay thai, silat, JKD, savate, & filipino martial arts. He opened the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy in 1992 and began to develop a sport martial arts team. Beginning in the mid 90's with the rise in mixed martial arts, Greg began to attract wrestlers who were interested in fighting. The Academy, as it is now known, has been ranked as high as 5th in America[4] Greg Nelson and his team of coaches have created multiple champion kickboxers, grapplers, and MMA fighters.


Greg was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, called neurolymphomatosis in 2002, and was successfully treated at the mayo clinic [5]
