Gregg Davies

Gregg Davies (born 1 December 1960, Wellington, Shropshire) is the present headmaster of Shiplake College, an independent day and boarding school near Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. In June 2018, Davies announced his retirement as headmaster of Shiplake College.

Education

Davies was educated at Grove Park School in Wrexham before gaining a scholarship to attend Shrewsbury School in Shropshire for Sixth Form. Here he was Head of House, School Prefect and School Captain of Football and Rugby. Davies then spent a year as an exchange student at Kent School, Connecticut USA before attending St Andrew’s University to read physiology. He later gained an MBA from the Open University.

Career

Davies started his teaching career at The Haberdashers’ Aske’s School, Elstree in 1984 before joining Fettes College, Edinburgh in 1989. After five years he was promoted to housemaster of Carrington House and in 1999 was made deputy headmaster. He also served as the interim headmaster of Fettes Preparatory School. In 2004 he became headmaster of Shiplake College and led the school through a sustained period of growth and success including improved academic results as well as an ‘Excellent’ inspection report from the ISI in 2015. Davies has served as chairman of the Society of Heads (2017-2018) and is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC), serving on the HMC Sports sub-committee. He is also a Reporting Inspector for the ISI as well as a lecturer on boarding provision issues. In December 2018 Davies was recognised as one of the top 25 influencers and innovators in education.

Media

In September 2016 Davies introduced a mobile phone ban for pupils during school hours at Shiplake College which gained much media interest. Davies continued to be an authority on the issue of technology in schools and took part in further appearances on Good Morning Britain, Sky News and Talk Radio.

Sport

As well as playing school and university rugby (including captaining the 1st XV at the University of St Andrews), Davies was an elite level World Rugby IRB panel referee, formerly ranked 1 in Scotland. He has been involved in refereeing several International and European cup fixtures including the 6-Nations, the Under 21 World Cup and the Heineken European Cup. He also played semi-professional football with Wrexham FC and was a member of the Kent School VIII which won the North American rowing championship in 1980. He is now a British Rowing umpire.

Family

Davies is married to teacher, Alison and has one daughter, Anna.
