Leonhard Gregor Herten (born April 29, 1955 in Korschenbroich, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany[citation needed]) is a German physicist.
Career
Gregor Herten studied physics at RWTH Aachen, where he received his doctorate in 1983.[1] He subsequently worked as a Research Fellow at the European Centre for Nuclear and Particle Physics, CERN, from 1984 to 1986. From 1986 to 1992, he was a Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, MA, USA, first as an Assistant Professor and later as an Associate Professor. From 1992 to 2023, he was Professor of Experimental Physics at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg; he has been retired since October 2023.
Research
Gregor Herten's research focuses on the investigation of the elementary building blocks of matter and their interactions using high-energy particle accelerators. He contributed to the discovery of the gluon[2] and to the observation of electroweak processes at the PETRA storage ring of the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron, DESY, Hamburg.[3]
Together with his research group at the University of Freiburg, he developed and built[according to whom?] large, precision particle detectors for muons for the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, LHC at CERN, which contributed to the discovery of the Higgs boson.[4][5] Further contributions include measurements of Z boson decays at the Large Electron-Positron Collider (LEP), as well as the search for new particles beyond the Standard Model and the study of heavy quarks at the LHC. [6] In 2024, he published a textbook in german language together with Christoph Berger entitled "Elementarteilchenphysik".[7] The English version of the book was published in 2025 under the title "Particle Physics".[8]
Administration
Gregor Herten served as Vice-Rector for Research at the University of Freiburg from 1995 to 2000. He was the German scientific delegate to the CERN Council, and its Vice-President from 2007 to 2009. He was a member and, from 2005 to 2008, Chair of Commission C11 on Particles and Fields of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP). From 2013 to 2015, he led the Section Matter and Cosmos (SMuK) and the Division of Particle Physics of the German Physical Society (DPG). In addition, Gregor Herten served as a scientific advisor on boards and committees of DESY, CERN, the "German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMBFTR)". and the German Research Foundation (DFG).
